WIP Wednesday!

Although my Wednesday is almost coming to an end, let me write a WIP Wednesday post for the first time and I have a perfect WIP to share with you all. I started this WIP only yesterday. Its a bag made out of a giant granny square.. I am making the bag out of the remaining Noro Kureyon from my stash. I am already sad that I am finishing them up so soon. Here is the progress so far..

This pattern is fully charted and its my first time deciphering a charted crochet pattern. Of course, I needed some hand-holding and my good friend Vimala helped me overcome my initial confusion with the charts. Thank you, Vims for the help. I've got the rhythm now and I am crocheting the granny square without referring to the chart. Yayyy me! I hope my over-confidence doesn't prove to be my undoing..

Once again, I am mesmerized by the color changes in Noro. I wish I had a lifetime supply of just Noro. ;-) I have another crochet bag WIP going on and both of these are part of the Bag -along in the SAARC group in Ravelry. Its the Summer Sling tote and I've finished both the sides and made the straps once and frogged it already as it was too long for my taste. After frogging too many stitches, I lost my mojo of finishing the bag and put it on timeout. And then, I got waylaid by this Noro Kureyon calling out to me from my stash. Noro is ebil, I tells ya! The rest is history, as they say! Here is one side of the poor Summer Sling Tote.. I hope to finish the bag before the Summer is over!

Writing on the wall!

I have almost bare walls at home. I rarely hang pictures and other doodads on the walls. However, I do have one plaque with a lovely writing on it. I had it in my previous home too. But, I forgot to pack it when I moved from there. I still hope that the new tenants there haven't thrown it out in trash. I was sad when I realized that I forgot the "Writing on the wall". I didn't waste time in replacing it in this home.. So, what is that 'Writing on the wall', you may ask?! This is it..

If you are unable to read the text on it, this is what it says.. "Sing as though no one can hear you. Dance as though no one is watching you. Love as though you have never been hurt."  Beautiful words, isn't it?

I have a scarf pattern under design.. I am writing up the pattern in parallel as I am knitting it.. Hopefully, it will be out for test-knitting soon. Here is a sneak-peak at it..

The color looks gorgeous, isn't it? Its Caron Simply Soft in Raspberry color-way. I can't wait to finish this scarf and share the pattern with you all. What are you guys working on? Leave a comment and share with me.

Bling is the word!

After my confession of my obsession with bling, it was only a matter of time before I tried my hand at making some knitter's jewelry. Yes. Stitch markers!! I have always been fascinated by these little notions every time I see them in an Etsy store. I the stitch markers that Sarah makes. You can find them in her Etsy shop, Exchanging Fire. I've been ogling them since the time I found her shop.  You've got to check out her shop if you are into buying glorious bling for knitting and crochet. In fact, she is my inspiration to make these stitch markers.

So, I decided I want to make stitch markers and  I went to this store called Itsy-Bitsy here in Bangalore and bought myself some jewelry and beading supplies. The store is a heaven for a craft fiend like me. They stock scrap booking, quilling and beading supplies. Sadly, they don't stock fabric and yarn. sad face  So, I came back with some quilling supplies and my first set of beading supplies. The kits available were pretty expensive for my budget. So, I just bought some assorted pliers, beads and findings. I wish they had an assorted bead section as well where in you can pick the beads you want, weigh them and pay for that. I was not thrilled with buying 30gms in each type of bead I wanted. So, in the end..I bought two kinds of glass beads and here is the loot.

In fact, this is the remaining loot after my stitch-marker making session. I love the pear-shaped green ones and they were my first choice. I really.really wish we could buy assorted beads of our choice. Then , I will buy 2 each in every kind that is available in the store.

So, I went to work with these and after a few hours, I got richer by 10 stitch markers.. I made both knitting and crochet stitch markers and realized that I enjoyed working with beads and strings. So, I am just going to stop talking now and just share the eye candy from my first ever beading escapade.

I made six markers with the pear-shaped beads and four with the spherical ones.

I am not very thrilled with the knitting stitch markers especially the left-most one in the picture above. Its very evident that my wire-wrapping skills need great practice. But, I think I've made a good start here. Now, I just need to buy a few extra hours for my days to add beading to my LOOOOONG list of hobbies. Can someone tell me where I can buy those hours?! ;-)

Of course, I referred to some online tutorials to help me. Here are a few links I referred in case you too want to make some of yours. shinycrafts-stitch-markers and sheepinthecity-stitch-markers I did not follow them exactly but, I referred to them heavily for making mine.

Tell me what your most recent hobby is or the craft you learnt most recently.. I would love to hear from you.

Your knitting and crochet time - 2KCBWDAY7

Write about your typical crafting time.

Mine is usually in the evenings..after I pick up Alvin from his day-care and get back from my work. I have a cup of coffee, freshen up and chat with Alvin about his day. After this, I decide what is for dinner and prepare that.. Once dinner is done, I let Alvin do whatever he wants and unwind myself with a bit of crafting. But, I try to squeeze a few crafting moments here and there all through the day, if I am at home. I don't take any projects to office as I never get any time for myself there. This pic was taken today at my living room by my Hubster especially for this post.

That is Alvin making his trademark goofy face for the snap. ;-) I am making the straps for my summer sling tote. And, yes. I am crocheting with my apron still on. Why do you ask?! I was in the middle of some chores and got a breather in between and that's my shoe-box WIP basket on my lap holding the yarn and pattern. I usually sit in my living room on the cane sofa, with the T.V set on a music channel or a nice movie/series and work on my projects. I have  large French doors in my living room opening into a balcony, giving me ample natural light during the day for me to work with.

Hubster obliged with a few more photos and here is a close-up of me working on the Summer sling tote. Yes. I am feeling a bit shy in front of the camera.. Rare are the days when I don't get some crafting time. I think my hobbies keep me sane.. so, I have to have my daily fix of yarn and fiber. ;-)

Of course, I can not get quality crafting time when Alvin is awake during the day. I spend some time on knitting or crochet or whatever is the craft for the day after Alvin has gone to sleep, if I have some energy left in me. More often than not, I prefer a book before crashing into my bed.  I also LOVE knitting in the early morning although, I do not get much chance to do this often these days. I like the quiet and calm of the early morning and the feel of yarn flowing through my fingers.. It feels very zen-like..almost like meditation.

Someday, I want to go on a knitting vacation... but, till then..I will take my knitting vacations in my living room with Alvin interrupting me a bazillion times before I make a single stitch. ;-) So, tell me what your favorite time to knit or crochet? Leave a comment and let me know. :-)

Today is day 7 and last day of the 2nd Annual Knitting and Crochet Blog Week and its my first time participating in this event. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed writing every post I wrote as a part of this blog week. I entered the blog week skeptical about my blogging skills...wondering if I will be able to bring out blog content for 7 days in a row. But, by mid-week I realized that I was looking forward to waking up in the mornings to write a post.. This blog week has pushed me to think about how to tell a story rather than write a post. I feel happy about my blog and proud of this virtual world I have created here. Thank you for every one who dropped by or left a comment. You all make my day everyday.

Something to aspire to - 2KCBWDAY6

Is there a pattern or skill that you don’t yet feel ready to tackle but which you hope to (or think you can only dream of) tackling in the future, near or distant?

Of course. I fear one thing and one thing only in knitting. Gauge! If you see my Ravelry notebook, you will see quite a few number of scarves, shawls and bags. But, you will not see a clothing item like a sweater or a cardigan. The only cardigan I have finished is the one I made for Baby Viru. And, baby things don't count much for gauge, right?! So, knitting an adult sweater or a cardigan is something I aspire to do this year. I do have one in progress which is hibernating worse than the meanest Grizzly! Its Odelia by Julie Weisenberger. Here is the progress so far..

About 10 inches from the bottom, and its owner is scared of knitting it further. What if it doesn't fit me? What if its too large for me? Its a bottom-up cardigan knit entirely in stockinette stitch - my favorite stitch. But, its been hibernating for a long time now. I see people churning out sweaters and cardigans by the dozen and think to myself, someday I will knit myself an cardigan and wear it proudly on myself. But, I am not sure if I will see that day in the near future.. Here is an earlier shot of  Odelia..

and, yes! That is an earring of mine moonlighting as a stitch marker... Thank you for all the earring love for my previous post. My earrings feel very appreciated. ;-) So, will 2011 be the year in which Josie defeats her fear of gauge and knits her first ever adult cardigan? or, will it be just another year of scarves, shawls and bags?! Only time will tell. :-)

So, tell me what do you aspire to do in knitting or crochet or whatever hobby that is yours? Share with me in the comments as I would like to hear from you.

And now for something completely different - 2KCBWDAY5

There are no rules of a topic to blog about but this post should look at a different way to present content on your blog.

This post is a confession. Confession of my obsession for earrings. I have an obscene amount of earrings for everyday wear. Not expensive gold and platinum ones. The simple and eclectic ones that do not cost you much..but, gives you to wear! I have an earring fetish! ;-) The last time I counted them, I had about 80 pairs. I can't show you my entire earring collection because that will mean a LOT of snaps here. So, I decided to show you my most favorite ones in my entire collection. Disclaimer: This is an image-heavy post. If you don't like too many images at one go, please enter at your own risk.. Also, I am not a jewelry or close-range product photographer. So, I've tried my best to capture what I see in my earrings. I hope you enjoy it.

Here is my most favorite pair of earrings in my entire collection. This earring reflects the colors I have in my wardrobe and it goes with almost all my dresses. :-)

Here is a pair of filigree earrings that are my favorites.. I love the cheerful blue color it is.. I have a dress that goes with this earring. Y'know.. I buy a pair of earrings only if they catch my eye at the first look. If I am dithering if I should buy them or not, I decide not to buy. I need to get the feeling that I-have-to-have-them.. Only then do I buy a pair of earrings.

Here are a pair of earring that I bought almost 7 years ago. I was out shopping with a friend of mine and I lost one of the earrings I was wearing then. I hate to walk around with no earring or just one earring. So, I entered a shop and came out wearing these..

Here is my most recent purchase of earrings. I bought these earrings in two colors.. They caught my 'eye' right away and I didn't think twice before snapping them from the store shelf. ;-)

Here is another favorite of mine that goes with a few dresses I have. I modified these earrings to suite my taste. They didn't come with the 3 drops below the bead. I didn't  like the look of it earlier but realized that they have the potential to look better. So, I did a small surgery on them and removed the earlier hangings and added the metal beads at the bottom.

And, just because I enjoyed taking pictures of these, here is an 'artistic' shot of the earrings..

And, here is one earring that I don't have any matching dress for. I bought them on a whim as they looked so very pretty. Maybe I should take them with me when I go dress shopping next to buy a dress that goes with them. Good idea, huh?!

The earrings look so brilliant that I think I will have a tough time finding a dress for them. And, do you see a pattern here?! Most ladies I know buy their dresses first and then buy accessories for them. But, not me! I buy my earrings first and then buy my clothes to go with them. Obsession much?! And, just because I went camera-crazy with these, here are a few more pics of them..

They do look like little drops of heaven ,don't they?! Now that you know the 'ugly' side of me, you tell me what your silly obsession is? I would like to hear from you.
